Under the Red Hills is a documentary photo series by Taras Ibragimov and Rimma Mareychenko, created in the city of Pokrovsk — one of the last industrial outposts of Donbas, now standing on the edge of destruction.
The project seeks to capture the city’s final breaths before its disappearance from the map. Between the coal heaps known as “red hills,” the ruins of apartment blocks, and the smoke rising from bombed neighborhoods, the camera becomes both witness and mourner.
Through aerial and ground photography, Under the Red Hills traces the anatomy of a vanishing city — its fragile geometry, its silenced streets, and the lives that once animated its space. It is a meditation on loss, transformation, and the last light that remains over a wounded landscape.
